If you live in Oman, you can authorise action in India by signing a power of attorney at the Embassy of India in Muscat. Oman is also a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents notarised and apostilled by the Omani authorities are recognised in India, though consular attestation is the route most Indian nationals use. The stamped document lets our advocates handle property, court, tax and business matters for you.

What clients in Oman ask us for
Business families from Gujarat, Kerala and Sindh have traded in Oman for generations and often hold companies, partnerships and commercial property on both sides. Their questions concern structuring investment into India, family companies where a branch feels sidelined, which may lead to tribunal proceedings, and succession planning so that Indian assets pass smoothly. Salaried professionals, by contrast, ask about buying and selling homes, tax on rent and inherited property.
Both groups share one need: the ability to complete formalities in India while remaining at work in Muscat, Sohar or Salalah.
Signing documents in Oman for use in India
The simplest path for an Indian passport holder is to sign the power of attorney before the consular officer at the Embassy, applying through its outsourced service centre with passport and resident card. Because Oman has joined the Apostille Convention, a document notarised in Oman and apostilled by the Omani Foreign Ministry is also valid for India; this is useful for corporate documents of Omani companies investing in India. Whichever route is used, check what the receiving Sub-Registrar or bank in India expects.
Stamping in India within three months of arrival applies to both. See the comparison guide.

Tax and money between Oman and India
Oman has historically levied no personal income tax and has announced a tax on high incomes from 2028, which may eventually change how the India-Oman treaty and India's deemed-residence rule apply to residents of the Sultanate. For now, Indian citizens in Oman with Indian income above fifteen lakh rupees fall within the deemed "not ordinarily resident" rule; overseas income is not taxed in India. Dividends and interest from Indian investments may benefit from treaty rates with a tax residency certificate.
Investment into Indian companies must follow the foreign investment rules and be reported on time; see FEMA compliance. Proceeds are repatriated according to the route by which the investment was made.
Court orders, family cases and working hours
Oman is not a reciprocating territory for enforcement of judgments, so an Omani decree needs a suit in India. Commercial contracts between Omani and Indian parties are better served by an arbitration clause, since awards from New York Convention countries notified by India are enforceable here with limited defences. Family court orders are tested under section 13 of the Code.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use an apostille from Oman for documents going to India?
Yes. Oman is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an Omani apostille is recognised in India. Indian passport holders more commonly use Embassy attestation.
Can an Omani company I own invest in an Indian company?
Yes, under the foreign direct investment route, subject to sectoral rules, pricing guidelines and reporting to the Reserve Bank within thirty days of share allotment.
Will Oman's planned income tax affect my Indian tax status?
It may, once in force, for those within its scope, because India's deemed-residence rule applies to citizens not liable to tax elsewhere. Review the position when the Omani law takes effect.
How are business disputes with an Indian partner resolved?
Through the forum in your contract: arbitration if there is a clause, otherwise the commercial court. Shareholder oppression claims go to the company tribunal.
Can I make a will in Oman for my property in India?
Yes. Sign it before two witnesses; attestation at the Embassy adds weight. A separate will limited to Indian assets is advisable.
Can I hold shares in an Indian family company while living in Oman?
Yes. Shares held from before you left continue on a non-repatriation basis; fresh investment follows the foreign investment rules.
Is an Omani notarisation accepted in India?
It should be apostilled by the Omani authorities or the document attested at the Embassy of India in Muscat.
